Thinking about doing
a gap year? Even know what a gap year is? Let us tell you!
What is Gap Year?
A gap year is taking time off, typically between high school
and starting college. Gap year can be great for students to
take a break from academic pursuits to do something different.
Gap year participants generally work or volunteer, frequently
abroad, and travel as well.
While not as common in the United States, gap year is gaining
popularity among students who need some time before they are
ready or able to commit to a full-time degree program in college.
Why a Gap Year?
While there are various benefits of a gap year, three benefits
generally emerge:
Personal growth and maturity
Broadening horizons and developing skills
Beneficial later in life
Summary
Gap year helps participants to grow and mature by taking on
greater responsibility. By organizing your own gap year experience,
you must overcome challenges of planning where to go, how
to get there, how to finance the excursion, where to live,
where to work, etc. Participating in a structured program
that assists in placement and living arrangements, still places
you in situations that you have never had to deal with before.
Travel abroad or to another part of the country makes you
more aware of how others live and think and changes many of
the assumptions that you can live comfortably with at home.
Many students return from gap year with new direction for
their life or new perspective on what they will do in college.
Additionally, gap year also makes you stand out after you
have graduated from college and are looking for a job or graduate
schools. Having pursued a gap year shows the type of initiative
and perseverance that impresses many employers. Having spent
time abroad also helps in in today's globalized marketplace.
